Say, You Want A Revolution? February 1, 2009

As more and more people are exposed to the salient fact that civil government, even your government, is a vicious gang of armed thugs whose sole purpose is to establish fear through the use of power so that they may insulate the interests of the exploiting class, the better the prospects for liberty become. The state, as we know it, is rapidly self-annihilating through the use of its own illogic. The state creates war so that there may be peace. The state institutes capitalism so that it may produce socialism for the rich. The state protects industry so that we may have equality of opportunity. The state violates your rights so that it may preserve your liberty. And so on. IT is contrary to human nature, human decency, and human flourishing. It MUST fail.

And so, to borrow a slogan from the Wobblies: We need to create a new society within the shell of the old. What a postindustrial society would look like has been speculated on by many bright minds: some of them libertarian, some of them not. Either way, change, real change, is coming sooner then you think. The state is an industrial-age dinosaur, hovering on extinction while new communities, replete with Peer 2 Peer ethos, are burrowed deep within its skeleton. The seeds are in place: we have the technology to allow an efficient, green, decentralized economy to hit the ground running. There is an economic crisis that, in all likelihood, will spell the end of the American Empire while global guerrillas and resilient communities begin to dominate the landscape. Order will be created spontaneously through the process of stigmergy and other forms of self-organization.  All that is needed is an educated populace; one that will produce a society conducive to human flourishing (involving peaceful activity, gay liberation, anti-racism, feminism, and other forms of social equality), and perhaps more importantly, one that recognizes that we, the human race, CAN do better.

So you say you want a revolution?

Iceland Government “Collapses”:

This is coming to America some day. Winston Churchill once said: “Americans can always be counted on to do the right thing…after they have exhausted all other possibilities.”

Well I think Churchill sucked and was a mass murderer, but I hope that he’s right on this one.

The Obama Presidency: Week One, in Review January 28, 2009

Biggest non-story of the week: Obama is a murderer.

Missiles fired from suspected US drones killed at least 15 people inside Pakistan today, the first such strikes since Barack Obama became president and a clear sign that the controversial military policy begun by George W Bush has not changed.

[...]

Eight people died when missiles hit a compound near Mir Ali, an al-Qaeda hub in Pakistan’s North Waziristan region. Seven more died when hours later two missiles hit a house in Wana, in South Waziristan. Local officials said the target in Wana was a guest house owned by a pro-Taleban tribesman. One said that as well as three children, the tribesman’s relatives were killed in the blast

But I’m sure those three children were enemy combatants.

Well, that didn’t take long. (Update: It’s 22 dead now, of which between 4 and 7 were “bad guys.”)

It’s hard to get a grip on exactly what happened. Mabye there was some shady intelligence and the U.S. acted on it, like they always do, by dropping a big effing bomb. Or maybe Obama just wanted to reassure the neocons that he would meet the quota of ‘wogs dead in the desert’ during his administration. But hey, did you see those inaugural balls? These days, it seems like killing brown people is a requisite part of the presidency. It’s as American as baseball and apple pie.

Warrantless wiretapping is okay.

The Obama administration fell in line with the Bush administration Thursday when it urged a federal judge to set aside a ruling in a closely watched spy case weighing whether a U.S. president may bypass Congress and establish a program of eavesdropping on Americans without warrants.

The liberal Rachel Maddow objects to the conventional wisdom that Afghanistan gooood, Iraq baaaad:

More murder by the Obama army. Read the whole thing. With the coming troop shifts from Iraq to Afghanistan, you can expect these types of events respond accordingly. That blood is on your hands, Mr. President.

This is just embarrassing:

I imagine that, one hundred years from now, historians will look back upon the ‘glory days’ of the U.S. empire (roughly 1945-2010) with utter disdain, seeing an era of moral bankruptcy. Sons and daughters will ask their parents and educators: Why did the American people, who sincerely considered themselves the leaders of the free world, consent to the genocide and immiseration of countless millions of their fellow men? And I imagine they will have the same puzzled response that I do today: “I just don’t know.”

“Democracy” here and abroad: Ain’t it great?

This week contained the 200th birthday of the French radical Pierre-Joseph Proudhon (b. Jan 15, 1809). Happy Birthday (see caption)!

In other news, we have a new President:

“No U.S. soldier ever dies in vain because they are carrying out the orders of their commander-in-chief.” – Barack Obama

“Whoever lays his hand on me to govern me is a usurper and tyrant, and I declare him my enemy.” – Pierre-Joseph Proudhon

The enemy of the people is now Barack Obama.
